Most schools offer both English Language and English Literature. English Language includes a variety of writing tasks as well as reading and researching. Speaking and listening are also an important part of this subject and could include presentations as well as taking part in group discussions. A qualification in English Language is very important, and often a requirement, for example, for entry into further education.

English literature is about studying writer's work, plays and poetry. It is often combined and integrated with some study of film and television. Sometimes the literature you study will be from a particular period or writer eg Shakespeare.
