Higher Education

Girl Green BooksMore than 75% of young people in South Tyneside continue in education after Year 13. Many of these will be studying HE (higher education) courses at college and university. HE courses are those that you can study after AS/A2s.

HE courses include HNCs and HNDs (higher national certificates and diplomas), foundation degrees or degrees and vocational courses such as NVQs.
You can go to uni from an Apprenticeship if you have a Level 3 qualification.

The choice of where to study is huge. Most HE courses take place at university, although some colleges and institutes of higher education offer them too. You could study at home or at the other end of the country; full-time or part-time.

HE gives you a wider choice of jobs, helps you earn more money and improves your career prospects. Those with a higher education qualification earn, on average, around 50% more than those without. You're more likely to get promoted in your job and half as likely to be unemployed.

While at university you'll also make new friends, have a great social life and gain confidence.
